On the eve of the official launch event for its new Hawk line of sports replica watches in Miami, Girard-Perregaux presented the first limited-edition model of the new collection, inspired by FOReverglades, a public art exhibition by William Sweetlove and the Cracking Art Group collective that is a centerpiece attraction of Miami's Art Week.
The unveiling took place during a breakfast event at Miami's Freedom Tower on the grounds of Miami-Dade College that is hosting the FOReverglades exhibit. I was among the guests who experienced Sweetlove's large-scale work, in which sculptural animals of odd sizes and unnatural colors and made of molded resin ?including giant red crocodiles ?temporarily overtake both the exterior and interior of the iconic building. Like much of Sweetlove's work, it has an environmental theme?the colorful crocodiles, turtles and frogs are used to call attention to the slow destruction of Florida's everglades.

The fake watch has a steel case with a divers?bezel, an automatic movement, and a striking white leather strap providing a stark background for the red crocodile figures. During the event (at which the artist also spoke about the FOReverglades exhibit), Girard-Perregaux CEO Michele Sofisti presented one of the replica watches to Miami-Dade College president Eduardo Padrón in honor of his support of education and the arts.
